Taking care of your metal roof is remarkably simple. If anyone tells you it’s complicated, they’re probably trying to sell you something. For your bi-annual metal rooftop maintenance, all you need are three easy steps to keep your roof in great condition!
Easy Step #1: Preliminary Cleaning (10-15 min)
To get started, you’ll need to grab a ladder, a trash bag, and a pair of shoes. Take those shoes, put them on, and take a brief walk around your house while you examine the roof. Keep an eye out for any leaves, twigs, or any miscellaneous debris that doesn’t belong on your rooftop. Also watch for smudges (but we’ll talk about this later). After you’ve ascended the ladder and cleaned away all the debris, be sure to take a moment and empty your gutters of any leaves that may have settled there. This protects your roof from unnecessary corrosion.
Easy Step #2: Smudge Removal (10-20 min)
Mud, oils, and other gunk will occasionally settle on your metal roofing. If the rain hasn’t washed them away already, you’ll need a soft cloth (or sponge) and some Formula 409 cleaner to rub it out. If any sludge is being stubborn, you can try a blend of water, household bleach, and dish soap. By removing these smudges, you’ll protect your paint job and keep your roof nice and shiny!
Easy Step #3: Final Touch Ups (0-30 min)
Your roof may or may not require this final step, but at least you’ll know how to do it! If you’ve spotted any foreign metal chips in the paint, deep scratches, or exposed portions of metal, you’ll want to grab a bit of (roof manufacturer-approved) paint. Remove any foreign objects and cover the exposed surfaces with a brushing. Only use a brush for these touch ups, not a sprayer.
Congrats! You’re done with your bi-annual metal rooftop maintenance. You’ll still want to schedule a professional checkup every few years or so, but now your roof will be protected from corrosion. For more details on caring for your metal roofing, feel free to talk with an expert at (817) 984-9961!
